Build Your Own Wort Chiller for Homebrewing
One day, I was bored and decided to build a wort chiller for my slightly unhealthy interest in homebrewing.
Previously, I used a makeshift setup in the shower, but it didn’t work quite as well as I’d hoped.
And this was the result:
All in all, this cost me about 600 SEK, and everything can be bought at Biltema.
- PVC hose, 12 mm, 5 meters (15-316) - 39.90 SEK
- Hose clamps, Ø 14-16 mm (61-848) - 14.90 SEK
- Nipple, 1/2" (26-714) - 26.90 SEK
- Adapter, M24 x 1 external thread, G1/2" (87-220) - 29.90 SEK
- Support sleeve, 12 x 1.0 mm (87-421) - 59.90 SEK
- Copper pipe, Ø 12 x 1.0 mm, 5 m (87-963) - 449 SEK
Depending on the fitting on your faucet, you may need different parts. You can find various options here.
All my purchases from Biltema:
Start by stripping all the plastic off the copper pipe.
Use a knife you don’t mind dulling because the blade will get quite worn from this.
When you’re done, it should look like this:
If the copper pipe you bought is pinched, you’ll need to cut off the ends.
Then bend the pipe into a spiral shape. I didn’t have any special tools, so I improvised with a pot.
Since copper is soft, it’s a good idea to use support sleeves where hose clamps can be applied.
Then connect it to the faucet. Easy peasy!
